A lot of questions exist about KENNEL COUGH.
Due to the recent outbreaks of kennel cough in
the area, we have taken special precautions to keep your pets as safe as possible.
Kennel cough is an airborne virus. It can
be contracted anywhere there are dogs in close proximity. A dog park,
veterinarians office, obedience class, kennel and even
a neighbors dog in your back yard.
Typical incubation period is from 3 days to one week.
The dog will have a hacking choking
sounding cough & will sometimes cough up phlem.
While extremely annoying, it is usually no more serious than the common cold.
However,
It can linger for weeks and occaisionally develop complications that are serious if not treated, such as pneumonia.
There are
vaccines available that work well in preventing this disease. But, no vaccines are 100% effective. New strains of viruses mutate
and can overide the vaccines. Just like human influenza virus changes each year, vaccines must keep up with the changes. A dog may
not even have the disease, but can be a carrier.
It is airborne, and even though we do not allow physical contact with pets
not from the same family, it is possible, though less likely, for your pet to contract kennel cough when they
are in the same vicinity as other dogs.
Just as there is no way to totally prevent your child from catching a cold,
it is impossible to totally prevent kenel cough
WE HAVE TAKEN SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS TO KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE.
THEY HAVE WORKED
& WE HAVE NOT HAD ANY CASES THIS PAST YEAR.
